Chief, Business Technology & Economic Development Division

  • Advised the Massachusetts Attorney General from the perspective of the business community on a host of legal and policy matters that affect business activity and the economy, including: labor issues (tip pooling, payroll debit cards, domestic violence work leave, independent contractor law, earned sick leave, and Blue Laws); energy and telecommunications issues (net metering, wireless and wire-line deregulation, and net neutrality); and business/industry policy issues (patent trolls, tech tax, non-compete agreements, and big data/privacy).

  • Regularly liaised with various industry trade groups and CEOs to identify issues, concerns and recommendations relative to the impact of state laws and regulations on businesses and then met internally with others in the office to seek to balance the intended policy objectives against the unintended business consequences.

  • Collaborated within the office to craft policies that fairly balance economic development with environmental stewardship, workers’ rights, and consumer protection.

  • Sole in-house counsel at publicly owned distributor of dental products and supplies (with over $450 million in world-wide annual sales and 3,000 employees). 
  • Responsible for all domestic litigation, real estate, vendor contracts, employee claims and issues, insurance claims and policies, company trademarks, and acquisitions.
  • Substantial involvement in the daily affairs of the company, including direct reporting to senior executives and management, interaction with approximately 100 branch and regional managers, engagement and oversight of numerous outside counsel, and management of a multimillion dollar legal budget.

  • Substantial experience in the defense of product liability claims and commercial litigation matters on local and national levels.
  • Managed hundreds of cases on a regional and national basis dealing with complex and evolving legal issues for clients such as Eli Lilly, B.F. Goodrich, Union Carbide, and W.R. Grace. 
  • Extensive work with expert witnesses on complex medical, scientific and damage-related issues for use at depositions, motions, and trials in federal and state courts.
